Flash Memory Update from Fusion-io

Posted on Oct 13, 2012 in SQL Server 2012 | 0 comments

Sumeet Bansal, Principal Solutions Architect at Fusion-io returned to the Silicon Valley SQL Server User Group recently.  It’s exciting to see the ongoing innovations at Fusion-io and the broad range of problems we can solve using Fusion-IO’s ioMemory and associated software.

Fusion-io is the market leader for use of Flash memory for IO-intensive tasks.  The company was founded in 2006 when its founders recognized that spinning disk-era storage could no longer keep up with modern data demands. Since then their capacities have increased, along with improvements to speed and reliability.  They have also broadened their product line to address more use cases – situations where organizations can utilize Fusion-io‘s technology to solve additional problems faced by enterprise IT.

Here are some SQL Server deployment scenarios Sumeet discussed:

  1.  Stand Alone.  This configuration is for maximum acceleration.  This can be used for Mirroring, and also with SQL Server 2012 Always On for High Availability.
  2. Virtual.  In this scenario, you can dramatically improve  the performance of virtual servers by using ioMemory with software from Fusion-io called ioTurbine.
  3. Clustered.  These deployments use optional software called ION Data Accelerator.  This allows the ioMemory to be accessed via Fibre Channel, IB, and iSCSI.  Clustered deployments see large (2X-20X) increases in application performance, and higher IOPS, delivered at a very low cost, all while providing High Availability.
